Discover & Share Nonfiction with your kids!

Kids love nonfiction books! It's true - watch babies with board books. They are delighted with books that provide photos of other babies’ faces. Toddlers and preschoolers pore over books about insects, animals, and the seasons. Older children devour books about real people - some that look like them and others about people living different lives at different times and in different places.

Info-loving kids seek books filled with facts, and field guides while young inventors and creators look for "how-to" books. Fact is, young people are naturally curious about their world - and when they are allowed to follow their passions and explore what interests them, it bolsters their overall well-being.

You can download a pdf of this flyer at  (https://tinyurl.com/44aphfpb)
Then, go have fun exploring things with your kids and celebrating their curiosity!

Museum Pass Kits available!

Take advantage of our Museum Pass Kits to explore science and visit the Sciencenter, Museum of the Earth, and the Cayuga Nature Center for free.

Two kits come with science experiment books and passes to the Sciencenter in Ithaca. The pass provides free admission to the Sciencenter for up to two adults and their children, all living in the same household. The Sciencenter requires those using the pass to also provide their library card and a photo ID at Sciencenter front desk.

Another kit contains a picture book explaining how a dinosaur skeleton got to the museum, with a pass to the Museum of the Earth and the Cayuga Nature Center. Visitors also receive discount member prices for special events at either one. The pass admits up to two adults and all children under age of 18.

In return for using the free passes, Candor Library asks that people fill out a survey. If you don’t have a library card, you can get one at the circulation desk in the library. The museum kits were created by the Finger Lakes Library System with funding provided by the Myrtle Dee Nash Memorial Fund.

Summer Reading begins July 5!

The Summer Reading program is ready to go ~ and sign-ups begin July 5th. Every reader receives a packet stuffed with goodies: a reading log, stickers, pencil, book mark, and a Bingo game. Make sure you cross out the challenges as you go along, because there's a chance to enter your completed Bingo Sheet for a prize drawing.

There's also a chance to enter the Writing & Illustrating challenge -  check out the info in your folder.

Every reader who signs up for Summer Reading gets to choose a free book, as well as a fuzzy sea creature to be their reading buddy. There are sea stars, lobsters, fish, whales, and lots of other sea creatures just waiting to be adopted. They love listening to stories, and might even inspire a few stories of their own.

And did I hear "prizes" being mentioned? There are lots of opportunities to win prizes. In addition to the Bingo prize and the Writing & Illustrating prize, there are reading prizes. Each week you can get tickets for the books you read (or, if they're long books, for the number of pages you read. At the end of summer tickets will be drawn out of the cans to see who wins a gift certificate at B&N.

This Take-n-Make is For the Birds!

Spring is coming - you can hear it in the songs birds sing, and see it in the early spring migrants returning. It's still a bit cold for insects and worms, so birds need a little smackerel of something to tide them over until spring arrives!

The new Take-n-Make has everything you need to make bird-seed ornaments that you can hang outside on a branch. There's also a fun bird-watching log book. And the library has lots of great books about birds to check out, and even some magazines for bird-watchers.

Blind Date with a Book is Back!

Remember when people used to cover racy novels in brown-paper book-covers? You'd know what you were reading, but no one else did.

Well, now the library ladies have gone one step further.

They've wrapped up a whole bunch of books in paper, and taped clues on the front. And they're inviting you to choose a book to take home and read. There might even be valentine candies involved!

This is definitely NOT a case of choosing a book by its cover - because you can't even see these covers. But you can definitely pick them up and weigh the alternatives...

Best part about it: if you like the book, you get to keep it!
