The Great Pumpkin & Fall Book Sale

353-pound pumpkin grown by Jason Jantz

Fall Festival is this coming weekend, and Candor Free Library is getting ready! As you can see, the Great Pumpkin has found a cozy resting spot next to the pollinator garden, courtesy of Rita Quinlan who bought it at the Tioga County 4-H Giant Pumpkin Auction. Drop by to get a selfie with the Great Pumpkin this weekend.

This is also the weekend for the Annual Fall Book Sale! The Friends of the Library have been busy pulling boxes and boxes and boxes of books from the closets, sorting out books and puzzles and movies, and sorting them into categories to make it a bit easier for you to find what you're looking for.

Whether you're a fan of Jane Austen or John Grisham, this is the perfect time to stock up on winter reading, riding-in-the-car books, snow day novels, pack-sized paperbacks, and I'm-too-tired-to-shovel-the-driveway books. You'll find histories, mysteries, sci-fi, crafts, kid's books, cook books, romance, western... enough to fill your book bag and then some.

As in the past, there are no prices. This is a pay-what-you-wish event, and all donations are used to make our library the best place it can be for our community. Come on down. Have some fun. Go home with a bag full of books!

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month!

We're celebrating September because it’s Library Card Sign-Up Month! If you don’t have a library card, come in to register for one – and you’ll earn a ticket for a $25 gift card to Brewed Awakening, Home Central, Side Hill Acres, or a Visa gift card that can be used anywhere.

If you already have a library card, drop in to verify that your card information is correct – and you’ll earn a chance to win a gift card, too. Take a minute to fill out a short survey form and get another ticket to drop in the cup.

Your library card is a passport to the world. With it, you can check out books, audiobooks, and movies. You can borrow magazines and e-books, access online movies, and NY Empire State park passes and Sciencenter passes.

Drop by the library to use computers, access internet, play with toys, games, and puzzles. Bring the youngsters to Storyhour and other children’s programming, or take an adult workshop. And while you’re visiting, take home some coloring pages or take-and-make activities and the spice-of-the-month. And remember: next month there’s a Book Sale, so you can stock up on winter reading!

Make sure to drop by the library’s Facebook page to catch the daily message highlighting the fun and functional resources that are part of the Candor Free Library community.

We're Seeking a New Director

We love our current library director, Marcia, but she is retiring. That means we need an organized, creative, and community-oriented person to fill the position. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong computer skills, verbal and written communication skills, and problem-solving skills. They would have the ability to establish effective working relationships with library staff and volunteers, and feel comfortable serving as the public face of the library in the community.

The Library Director is responsible for maintaining a welcome environment for patrons, supervising staff, working with the Board of trustees, developing programming, managing the collection, grant writing, record-keeping and oversight of the budget, and managing the library facility.

We are seeking someone with at least two years of education or training beyond high school, experience working with people of all ages, knowledge of computer technology (including the online catalog system), and the ability to work in a dynamic and changing environment. Library experience is helpful.

If you are interested, you can find a full library director job description at the library website, along with compensation and how to apply. Submission Deadline: Friday June 9, 2023.
