"Coding Academy" ~ Saturday, December 9

Wiggle your fingers and flex those coding muscles because on Saturday, December 9 we're hosting "Coding Academy".

Coding with Anna and Elsa at Hour of Code
Join us for an afternoon of computer coding fun on and off the screen, creating games, and a chance to win a hot-off-the-press coding activity book.

What is coding? It's a way to talk to a machine in a language it understands. Coding is what makes it possible for people to create computer software, apps and websites. Without code, you wouldn't be reading this blog post.

So, is it hard to do? Well, have you ever told a friend how to make something? If so, you already know the basics of coding: communicate directions in the order they need to be followed.

Why learn about coding if you don't plan to program computers? Good question! Consider all the stuff in your life that is dependent on computer technology: cell phone, laptop, ATM at the bank, - even the robotic vacuum cleaner. The future is tech-oriented, so even if you don't plan to work directly with computers you'll need to know how to use them. And maybe even talk to them. Plus "coding" is good exercise for brains of all ages. It makes you think about how to solve a problem.

So grab a friend, a parent, a grandparent - and head to the library for some coding fun.
When: Saturday December 9 from 1-3 pm
Where: Candor Free Library
Cost: free
Coding Academy is open to kids of all ages from 8 to 80 (but those under 12 years old need to bring an adult).
To Register: drop by the library or call 659-7258

This event is part of “Hour of Code™”, a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org.
