There's a saying that one man's trash is another man's treasure. Library treasurer, Don Weber has taken that to heart, turning junk mail into art - at least the stamps on junk mail. Not just the stamps on the outside envelope either; he uses the stamps on the return envelopes too.
For the past 35 years Don has been collecting junk mail stamps. Now he's turning them into art. Don has painstakingly separated stamps from their envelopes and sorted them into collecting envelopes: apples, grapes, conestoga wagons, trolley cars, coffee pots, Navajo jewelry, mesas and plateaus of the Southwest, flags, flags, and more flags.
One spells out the word "art". Look closely and you see that every stamp portrays a work of art: quilt designs, tiffany lamps, decorated coffee pots, cool design features on cars, turquoise and silver. "Patriotism" is all red-white-and-blue, with a variety of flags, stars, and even Lady Liberty. “Transport” is composed of stamps
featuring conestoga wagons, coaches, trolleys, trucks – things with wheels that
spell out the word “wheels”. There are lots of clocks on that one. That's because trains and buses run on a schedule, and clocks themselves are wheels - at least the old ones, when you took them apart, had wheel gears of all sizes.
