Memorial Day was set aside as a day of remembrance ~ a day to remember those who died while serving in our country's armed forces. The holiday is observed every year on the last Monday of May.
It originated after the Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. At that time it was called Decoration Day. Over time, Memorial Day was extended to honor all Americans who died while
in the military service.
