Tis the Season for Sharing Stories

The weather outside is frightful. But inside a book... it could be a whole different world.
Here are a few books to celebrate the season, from winter to Hanukkah to Kwanzaa to Christmas.

No two alike
by Keith Baker.

Follows a pair of birds on a snowflake-filled journey through a winter landscape. Observations of branches and trees to entire forests show that even when things look similar, they are different. Like snowflakes, no two are alike.

Owl moon
by Jane Yolen

This is the tale of a winter’s night beneath a full moon. A father and daughter walk into the woods to find a Great Horned Owl.

The legend of Old Befana : an Italian Christmas story
retold by Tomie de Paola.

Years ago, when that first star shone above the manger, Befana's household chores kept her from finding the Baby King. Now she searches every day, leaving gifts for children on the Feast of the Three Kings.

A Hanukkah treasury
by Eric Kimmel

Stories, songs, recipes, and activities related to the celebration of Hanukkah.

The story of Kwanzaa
by Donna L. Washington

An introduction to Kwanzaa that provides a brief sketch of African-American history and the origins of the festival. It explains the structure and customs of the seven days of Kwanzaa, and a craft and cooking project are included.

Santa Duck
by David Milgrim.

When Nicholas Duck finds a Santa hat and coat on his doorstep, he decides to look for Santa to tell him what he wants for Christmas. Meanwhile, all the other animals mistake him for Mr. Claus.

Dear Santasaurus
by Stacy McAnulty

Naughty comes easily to Ernest. Nice is harder. But maybe if Ernest writes to Santasaurus about all the ways he's tried to be helpful and well-behaved... maybe he can get the Jurassic Turbo Scooter X9 with the working headlight, racing fin, and secret compartment he really, really wants.

The Night before Christmas
 by Clement Moore

There are a few retellings of this classic tale. Perfect for reading while roasting chestnuts over an open fire.
